Being reminded as I tap away this morning that some vast percentage of constructing a narrative is getting the transitions in the right places (even on a paragraph and sentence level) and the narrative energy and line of direction flowing. Getting the horses pulling in the right direction is only half of it. There have to be traces connecting them to the thing to be pulled.
Also, it's all about the goddamned verbs.

A lovely recipe a friend of mine made up. He's a apocalyptic fantasy writer and Arkmar is a country in one of his latest stories. This recipe is all his and so credit goes to him.

Thank you, to everyone who is or has served in the armed forces. I wish you well, and I wish for a day when you can all go home and raise cabbages.
“I will come to a time in my backwards trip when November eleventh, accidentally my birthday, was a sacred day called Armistice Day. When I was a boy, all the people of all the nations which had fought in the First World War were silent during the eleventh minute of the eleventh hour of Armistice Day, which was the eleventh day of the eleventh month.
“It was during that minute in nineteen hundred and eighteen, that millions upon millions of human beings stopped butchering one and another. I have talked to old men who were on battlefields during that minute. They have told me in one way or another that the sudden silence was the voice of God. So we still have among us some men who can remember when God spoke clearly to mankind.
“Armistice Day has become Veterans’ Day. Armistice Day was sacred. Veterans’ dDy is not.
“So I will throw Veterans’ Day over my shoulder. Armistice Day I will keep. I don’t want to throw away any sacred things.
“What else is sacred? Oh, Romeo and Juliet, for instance.
“And all music is.”
--Breakfast of Champions, Kurt Vonnegut, 1973

So far today I have:
- taken the dog out and thrown his ball for him
- put away the massive tea shipment that arrived yesterday
- made tea
- drunk some of same
- slowly and mindfully eaten two thirds of a very good muffin (paying attention while eating good food: best meditation available!) (although I like to think other parts of me are enjoying the food even when the ego is checked out)
- washed a load of dishes
- kneaded two loaves of bread and put one in the freezer
- set the other one to rise
It's 7:35.
I am about to yoga, shower, dress, put my wrist braces on and write at least six pages.
I think I may need to sleep all afternoon, or the virtue around here just might rise to toxic levels. Or possibly that was all a catwax of epic proportions.
...but the cats are so shiny now. And if I hadn't made bread there would be nothing for supper!

This new Lady Gaga music video is total alienating eye candy.
( Things I love about this video: )
I also love the Sia's Buttons for the same visual reasons, except it probably cost about a gazillion less to make.

I saw a girl wearing the Pheonix Wright one in black, and I am TOTALLY getting it.

Also, if you haven't played Mario & Luigi : Boswer's Inside Story, I absolutely love it. It's really cool, and the storyline is actually very interesting and easy to follow. The battle system is turn-based, but the new moves and special moves are really cool. Bowser even has moves using Koopas, Goombas, and Shyguys; not to mention when he's giant.
Who else really enjoyed it? :D

I decided to hurl myself off overhangs today, on the theory that if I not getting lighter, I had bloody better well start getting stronger. So, two attempts at a 5.8 on the 45-foot wall (second time I made about 30 feet of it, but you know, the damned thing is so overhung that when you come off you don't get back on) and then I sent an overhung 5.7 I've done before. As a reward, I decided I was going to do something I had never tried, which I thought was probably too hard for me. A 5.8 in the front corner, with a little roof over it.
Reader, I sent it.
I expected it to be brutal and crimpy and awful at the bottom, but really it was lovely--all balance and technique, and moving your feet around, and your hands are mostly just there to give you things to balance on. Apparently, I climb better than I realized, because I just floated up it.
I fell off scads trying to get over the roof, though. Don't worry. *g*
Going back tomorrow. We'll see if I have any juice.

While I was melting butter for the muffins (Chaz's blueberry muffin recipe, modified for orange-cranberry-walnut whole wheat muffins (1) (2)) the microwave attempted to immolate itself.
This is not a tragedy, as said microwave was left behind by the last inhabitants of this residence, and it's old enough that it has rotary dials and wood-grain.
But I am glad I didn't bother cleaning it today.
(1)If it's good with orange extract, it will be REALLY good with orange extract, Cointreau, orange juice, and bitter orange peel. Right?
(2) Yuppie wand blender is good for pulverising the cranberries into the yogurt. I thought they would be a bit much, whole.

The Shinshi arc is fan-freaking-tastic.
I'm very, very impressed, on all levels. Good, solid character work, serious intriguing (I mean, there were what, six different angles various officials were working at the same time? I mean, yeah, a couple were minor, just to get reluctant characters to take promotion...but at the same time, when you're trying to build a loyal, competent Court, getting the right people into the right places without being all obvious about it is important. Even better if you can make it seem like their own idea.), and it mostly avoided rendering the protagonist inert in all of this, despite her position as a relative innocent.
(Also, /really/ liked the scene with Ryuuki and Shuurei after the ceremony (deliberately vague to avoid spoilers). That's the kind of conflict that more romance series need more of: not based on tragic misunderstanding, or on someone holding on to the Idiot Ball, but the requirements of duty and divergent desires. And they actually TALKED ABOUT THEM. Like adults. Ye gods.)
I also give the series serious kudos for the route they're taking with Shuurei's femininity. She's one of the most 'real-feeling' female characters I've seen, particularly in a romantic series of this nature, where the female lead tends to fall into one of a couple of different stereotypes. (For the record, I don't think there's anything wrong with that, any more than there's something wrong with being able to count on the male lead of a harem series to be a lovable, well-meaning dork. But it's nice to see things change up on occasion.)
Some of Ryuuki's decisions still make me twitch, from a politicking angle, but he is pretty motivated by emotion. It's not out of character for him, so I can't complain.

My boyfriend recently found it at a GameStop; we drove about an hour or so just to pick it up.
And it is absolutely AMAZING.
I've watched him play it, and it is so beautiful. I am going to steal it away from him, as well as Shadow of the Colossus.
I highly, HIGHLY recommend this game to anyone out there.
It's rare, so good luck finding it for a reasonable price (aka $40 or so).
The Last Guardian trailer almost made me cry.

The last couple of days have been filled to the brim with errand-running and stuff-doing, including (but not limited to) - grocery shopping, post-office visiting, bank dropping-by, University Book Store stock (and mail order) signing, print framing, house cleaning, laundry washing, official correspondence exchanging, outline jotting, fish tank changing, and event preparations.
That last one may have you wondering … what event?
Don’t tell me you’ve forgotten already!
Here, let me refresh your memory.
This coming Thursday, at 15th Avenue Coffee and Tea on Capitol Hill,* I’ll be hanging about and signing books and basically having a marvelous time at a most excellent party being thrown by some of my awesome friends. No, seriously. Ellen, Suezie, and Psynde — these three have knocked it out of the park … and into the local establishment where there will be music, costumes, prizes, booze, caffeine, and snacks for the ordering. You can click here for details or heck, just show up some time after six o’clock and join the fray.
Bring your books and I’ll sign them if you like, or buy them at the event. Or forget the books, and just swing by to be social. I’m always happy to meet new people, and Mark Henry will be MC’ing the event. If you’ve never heard Mark MC anything, then you must absolutely not pass up this opportunity. If you have, then I’m already confident that you’ll be in attendance, unwilling to miss it.
This will be an all-ages event, since (a). it’s open to the public, and (b). Boneshaker is a bit of an adult/young adult crossover. Or so I am told. In any event, lots of young adults seem to be reading it, either by swiping it from their parents or nabbing it from a friend. Let me be the first to say I APPROVE OF THIS BEHAVIOR. Please do carry on.
Anyway. It’s coming up on suppertime here and the husband just got home from work, so I’m going to wrap this up and go get myself some noms. Thanks so much for reading, and I hope I’ll see some of you locals later on this week!
* Yes, I am aware that this is really a Starbucks in disguise. We tried first and foremost to run with an independent shop for this event, but we got nothing but hassle and run-around; and then the 15th Ave people stepped in. The store has been exceedingly supportive and helpful, and I’m grateful for the venue.

So, as some of you may know, Steam had a 50% special on Mass Effect this weekend, and my boyfriend suggested I get it. (When I questioned him about it, he reminded me that he'd played it months back and that it was one of the few games he actually thoroughly enjoyed anymore... which is saying a lot.)
So I went ahead and bought it on Saturday, and wow. I can't believe I didn't get this game ages ago! I'm having so much fun with the level of interactivity involved and all the different conversations you can have (and everyone has a voice actor, which is so cool). The amount of detail and information the creators put into the history, politics, races, planets and star systems are pretty awesome, too. You can even go to Luna (our moon) and see a really spectacular view of Earth from it. I haven't even beaten the game yet and I'm super excited to play it all over again just so I can give my character a different "personality" and see where it leads me. I had been playing Borderlands (another really fun one) before this and leveling a Siren, but I haven't even opened that game since I bought this; ME has just completely taken the cake.
Has anyone else ever "discovered" a game well after its release? I honestly hadn't even heard of it except when my b/f had mentioned he was playing it ages back.
